Fernlea’s Flora

It has been surprising and encouraging to see the speed and diversity with which native flora has begun to spontaneously return to Fernlea, simply as a result of resting the land.

In October 2019, only a year after livestock was removed from the property, an expert team visited Fernlea to walk the perimeter and identify any promising new growth on the property. Thirty-six species of native plants were found, indicating a promising step toward returning the land to its natural state.

Since that time, several more species have been identified. Of particular note is the abundance of the slender wire lily, which is classified as a rare plant in Victoria.
